Orthokine is a new treatment against osteoarthritis which is highly effective in knee arthritis as well as in degenerative backbone diseases and intervertebral disk diseases.

It is the first scientifically proven autologous product against placebos and corticosteroids.

Its main advantage as opposed to conventional therapies is that Orthokine is safe, tolerable (it has no side effects, unlike anti-inflammatory drugs) and its beneficial effects last longer: they have been proven to last for two years, and the patient’s quality of life in this period improves significantly. Therefore, fewer medical procedures are needed during this time, for the functionality and mobility of the joint is increased and pain is reduced. It is a safe long-term alternative to conventional treatments.

What does the treatment involve?
The treatment consists on the injection of proteins from the patient’s blood in the affected area. AUTOLOGOUS PROTEINS COMING FROM THE PATIENT AND FROM HIS/HER OWN BLOOD ARE USED and applied as a treatment.

In which processes has it been scientifically proven?
Knee osteoarthritis: the therapy has been proven effective and safe. It significantly reduces pain and inflammation in every 3 out of 4 patients.

Back conditions: in degenerative back conditions, Orthokine is a clear alternative to current treatments. It improves degenerative processes of the back and intervertebral disks; it also diminishes pain significantly in every two out of three patients treated.

Which are the conventional therapies?
Steroids, hyaluronic acids and analgesics.

Nowadays, the ORTHOKINE system has been developed in the Alicante province EXCLUSIVELY by the Molecular Orthopaedics Unit of Hospital Internacional Medimar with the collaboration of Zaraclinic SL.

Moreover, this unit has been developing for years a therapy based on autologous plasmas rich in platelet growth factors (P.R.G.F) with excellent results in several different areas of medicine such as Orthopaedic surgery, Traumatology, Oral and dental surgery, Ophthalmology, Cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, etc. The unit has also collaborated with teams from different medical specialties with a view to stimulating tissue regeneration. PRGF simulates and optimizes the physiological repair mechanisms which are spontaneously triggered in all the tissues after an injure caused by a traumatism, a surgical treatment or an illness.

These proteins induce directed cell migration, cell proliferation and differentiation, formation of new blood vessels, etc. All these processes are essential to repair and regenerate all kinds of tissues. Moreover, it has been observed that five days after the application of PRGF there are, depending on the tissue, up to 40 times more cells working in the treated area than with conventional protocols; these cells reconstruct, cicatrize, regenerate and, in the end, cure the affected zone.

In the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the formation of bones has been speeded up, and the integration percentage of the implants has been improved up to a 99% success rate. Furthermore, spectacular advances have been made, such as the placing of implants and provisional teeth in only one day.

What is the use of ORTHOKINE?

How many times do I need to undergo the treatment?
Normally you would need between four and six infiltrations administered at your Doctor’s discretion, usually once a week.

When will I start to feel its beneficial effects?
Generally, the effects of Ortokine start to show after the second infiltration, although it might not happen until a couple of weeks after the last infiltration is made.

Does the Orthokine treatment have anything to do with other treatments such as platelet concentrate?
Not at all. Orthokine is based on the concentration of your own serum of anti-inflammatory factors released by your own leukocytes to block the receptors against pro-inflammatory factors causing pain.

Could I suffer an allergic reaction?
That is impossible, for you would receive your own proteins; your own immune system produces them and the Orthokine process concentrates them in your serum to be applied exclusively to you.

We do not know of any study indicating so, but we do know of several studies about the use of Orthokine monotherapy and its high degree of efficiency. The Orthokine therapy bases its efficacy in safety and comfort.

How many blood tests will I need done?
In principle, just one blood test will be necessary to obtain the samples needed for a complete treatment (usually comprising 4-6 infiltrations). The samples will be frozen and kept exclusively for your use for seven months, even though the treatment will be completed in four-six weeks.

Is there any risk of transmission of diseases such as AIDS or Hepatitis?
Absolutely none, for the treatment uses your own blood. Furthermore, the infiltration is made using a filter preventing the access of bacteria and thus minimizing the risk of an accidental infection.

How should I prepare for the blood sampling?
Almost no preparation is necessary. You should fast for at least 6 hours and hydrate yourself by drinking a couple of glasses of water.

Am I entitled to know about the state of my frozen samples?
Of course. The whole process is subject to a traceability control so that the staff in charge always knows about the extraction, handling, freezing and defrosting of the samples as well as the temperature they are at during the freezing process and the syringe batch used.
